Methodology
An award is worth exactly what its count is worth. This page is the whole count, in plain English: how a gym gets on the ballot, what makes a vote count, and what money can and can't touch. It applies identically in every region, every season.
Step by step
The six categories
Every region runs the same six categories, and each one recognizes the same thing everywhere. Use these as the criterion when you nominate or vote.
The room that does everything well: instruction, culture, schedule and the people who keep coming back.
Recognizing consistent instruction, age-appropriate coaching, safety and a culture that keeps kids learning.
Recognizing preparation, coaching that travels to the tournament, and a team that shows up on the podium and for each other.
Recognizing welcoming culture, patient instruction and a clear path for people stepping onto the mats for the first time.
Recognizing consistent classes, strong coaching, representation and an environment where women can train and progress.
The person who changed how a room trains: technical depth, attention to every belt, and the reason students stay.
What makes a vote count
A counted vote is one confirmed click from one real person. Specifically:
Excluded votes aren't hidden. Each season's results publish the verified total per category, the total number excluded region-wide, and the breakdown by reason — for example, "37 excluded: 22 unconfirmed, 11 disposable email, 4 duplicates." We don't publish excluded numbers per gym or per category: that would name-and-shame publicly without process. The reason-level breakdown proves the process ran. A prize built to be bought never publishes exclusions, because it never has any.
The published count never changes. Once a season closes and a count is published, it is the count. A link clicked after the close shows a page saying the season is closed; the vote doesn't count. This rule is what makes the count trustworthy.
The money wall
Money can buy: a Winner Kit after winning (a plaque, printed with the verified count), a featured profile in the directory (labeled "Featured", affecting directory position only), and category sponsorship (a brand's name beside a category, never a hand in it).
Money can't buy: a nomination, a place on the ballot, a single vote, a result, or any change to how votes are counted. There is no price for any of these, at any amount, from anyone.
The wall in one sentence: everything paid lives in the directory and the merchandise; everything voted lives in the awards; and no paid product appears on a ballot or a results page.
Nomination round · why counts are private
While the nomination round is open, we do not publish nomination counts of any kind — no per-gym or per-category counts, no leaderboard, no rankings, no regional total, no "so far" tallies. The counts are recorded and auditable — they just aren't shown until results.
Coach of the Year · name consolidation
Coach of the Year is a person, not a gym. Different community members write in different variations of the same person's name ("Coach Taylor" and "Bil Taylor" for the same William Taylor). At counting time, we consolidate variants manually so one coach doesn't lose to itself split three ways.
Independence
The BJJ Awards is independent and black belt–run, with no media company or gym group behind it.
Disputes and corrections
Wrong gym data in the directory, a result you want to understand, a voting pattern that looks strange: write to count@bjjawards.com. Every report gets a reply, and material corrections are published on the affected page.
